On June 1, 2020, Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador began construction on the flagship project of his administration: the Maya Train. But from its inception, the 966-mile railway circuit around Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula has been mired in controversy. Rushed through during the COVID-19 pandemic, constructed by Mexico’s Secretary for National Defense, and notorious for its deforestation of tens of thousands of hectares of highly biodiverse tropical forest, the Train’s impact will be felt for generations.
