The modern era is defined by global crises such as anthropogenic climate change, biodiversity loss, and worsening socioeconomic inequality. Following sociologist Boaventura De Sousa Santos (2014): “we are facing modern problems for which there are no longer modern solutions.” Existing governance systems are failing to address escalating planetary harm.
In response to growing calls to theorize and realize alternative socio-ecological futures, Ky’s research grapples with the politics of infrastructure, indigeneity, and ecosystems to examine how Indigenous land defense movements resist, reimagine, and reconfigure existing environmental governance norms. Ky’s goal is to weave knowledges born in struggle with anthropological and political theory in order to build bridges across ontological difference and inform life-sustaining environmental policy in a climate-changed world.
